Belle A. Espinal began her artistic journey as a black-and-white film photographer in the South Bronx, NY. The International Center of Photography (ICP) in Manhattan had a satellite program in her home borough. Espinal began taking classes at 8 years old and found the darkroom a refuge. She took photography classes for the next 10 years and participated in regular exhibitions. By 2011, she took part in the year-long photography fellowship at ICP headquarters and was recommended for a semester-long study-away art program, allowing her to venture into sculpture and woven tapestry work.
